I have now photographed three bar mitzvahs for this family, and each one has been its own thing. Michael's was the biggest. The synagogue, a full reception, and then a party at a bowling alley that had more energy than any venue I have been in all year.
The crowd was massive, the kind of gathering where you look around and realise there are people in every corner and every corner has something worth photographing. I moved the whole day, never stopped. The ceremony was formal and composed. The bowling alley was not.
There is something about photographing the same family across milestones. You start to see how the kids carry themselves differently, how the parents look at each child. Michael was ready for it. You could tell.
